Note: The hyperlinks below should still work, but I will no longer be updating this section for accuracy or dates of submission. Be aware that some of these grants come & go - here today, gone tomorrow. I will, however, add any new programs that I discover.
Summer Institutes
Columbia University’s Summer Research Program for Secondary School Science Teachers is open to licensed middle school science teachers. The program includes a research fellowship position for two consecutive summer sessions. The program provides teachers with a $6,000 stipend for each summer plus internet access at their school and $1,000 for each summer to purchase instructional materials. Application usually available in early Novemer.
The Brandwein Summer Leadership Institute allows teachers to gain experience in field studies in rural New York, lodging provided. The program is open to secondary science teachers and provides up to $1,200 for the first summer, the money to be used to help you share your experience with other educators. Additional funding is available if you continue over the following two years.
The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation offers 3 CORE Summer Institutes for 6-12 teachers in Biology & Environmental Science. Programs are available in the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, Princeton University (also in NJ, of course). Upon completion of either of those two institutes, participants will be eligible for a summer institute in Costa Rica the following year. Each Program provides a $1,200 stipend in addition to the learning experience.
The Rockefeller University Science Outreach Program offers 6-7 weeks of laboratory research experience to K-12 teachers in each of two summers. Teachers earn $5000 and the hours are flexible. Deadline is usually first of February.
Grants
Toyota Tapestry: Up to $10,000 for innovative curriculum enrichment proposals in the areas of Environmental Science, physical Science, Science & Literacy. Deadline usually mid-January.
Toyota TIME : "Toyota's Investment In Mathematics Excellence (TIME) is a grant awarding teachers up to $10,000 for innovative projects that enhance mathematics education within a school." Applicants must be math teachers but may also team up with teachers from other disciplines. See website for details or e-mail me. Deadline usually first of January.
Toshiba America Grant: Up to $10,000. Applications for grants less than $5,000 are accepted year-round. For more than $5,000, grants are reviewed twice per year with deadlines the first business day in August and again in February. Check website to make sure this info is up to date.
The 2003 Gustav Ohaus Awards Program recognizes innovations which have the potential to improve science teaching at the elementary, middle level, high school, and college levels. These innovations may be in the form of curricula design, teaching strategies, administrative and/or organizational patterns, and laboratory utilization. The program offers one award of $1000 and one award of $750 for each of the four grade levels: Elementary, middle level, high school, and college level. Deadline usually mid-October.
Teacher Network offers 2 types of grants: Disseminator Grants offer $500 for NYC public school teachers to disseminate original classroom curriculum projects that have been successfully implemented in the classroom. Adaptor Grants are for $250 and given to teachers who wish to adapt a curriculum project from their catalog (viewable online). The grant application itself can be submitted online. Deadline is usually first of May.
Michael Jordan Fundamentals Program: Up to $2500. "Applicants must develop an original lesson plan or thematic unit. Unique teaching methods and projects are encouraged. The grants fund resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, or other costs related to field trips." June 15th is the usual deadline.
