District Six no longer exists. The former District Six is now part of Region 10 along with former districts 3 & 5. Combined these three districts now make up geographically over half of Manhattan and include over half the student population of Manhattan. The following description of District Six is being kept here for archival purposes
District Six in the Washington Heights section of New York City has been a leader in science education reform over the last 10 years. Starting with a grant from the NSF in 1991, we implemented an inquiry approach to teaching science in grades K-6, through inquiry-based kits from FOSS and INSIGHTS and extensive staff development. Our staff development strategy included in-depth training of "point lead teachers" at the Workshop Center at City College in New York City, the implementation of "Super Science Saturdays," full day workshops for teacher, and finally the employment at the district of science facilitators who conduct ongoing staff development at the individual schools during school hours. We are now (2000/2001) in the second year of a five year program, the "SMART Process," to revamp our middle school science program. This website, which is designed as a meeting place for teachers and the district to communicate and share ideas, is part of our overall professional development strategy.
