Introduction

The Middle School Science Curriculum Frameworks (MSSCF) is organized to provide a structure for the teaching of science to children in grades 5,6,7, and 8. This framework is to be used by teachers as the basis for a unified instructional program for intermediate school students in Community School District Six. By the end of the intermediate school experience it is expected that our children will develop the habits and career- related skills in science that will enable them to work cooperatively with others and achieve success in the high school setting.

This project reflects current educational research and is aligned to the National Science Education Standards (1996) and the New York City Performance Standards for Science (1997). The Core Objectives in this document were derived from the New York State Intermediate Level Science Core Curriculum Guide and the New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology. The content knowledge and process skills embedded in the MSSCF address both the Intermediate Level Science Exam, as well as the New York City Grade Eight Exit Project Guide. In preparing the 3rd edition we also consulted Project 2061 Benchmarks for Science Literacy and NSTA's Pathways to the Standards: Middle School Edition for a better understanding of developmental appropriateness.

The MSSCF document is a work in progress. Our ultimate goal is to develop a Middle School Science Program that seamlessly integrates science content knowledge with the inquiry process. In the 2001/2002 school year we will be piloting selected materials and programs to help fulfill the requirements of the Middle School Science Curriculum Frameworks.
